Originating in the Italian Renaissance, Ballet later became a concert dance form in France and Russia. It is a highly technical dance form with its own distinctive vocabulary that has transformed into the definitive foundational technique of many other genres of dance. Classical ballet emphasizes fluid, graceful movements and long lines, along with strict adherence to correct form and technique, especially turn-out of the legs.
Jazz dance originated as a combination of African rhythmic stepping and European styles of dancing. Together, they created what is now considered Jazz dance. It is characterized by its strong emphasis on rhythm and syncopation and precision. Jazz dance tends to be upbeat, high energy dancing with flashy movements based in technique.
Tap dance is a style of dance where the dancers are fitted with tight taps on the heels and toes of their shoes. This creates sounds of audible beats by rhythmically striking the floor.
Tumbling is another name for floor gymnastics. This is performed without any equipment. Flips such as cartwheels, rolls, walkovers, handsprings, and tucks are commonly performed in this genre.
Hip Hop is a range of street dance styles performed to hip hop music or hip hop culture. It includes styles such as locking, freestyle, popping, house, and breaking (break dancing).
Modern Dance is a dance discipline that retains some aspects of ballet technique by its deconstruction into more natural movement. It is a creative type of dance that features improvisation and is contemporary in form. It uses abstract movements to portray ideas, feelings, and emotions. Contemporary aspects consist of more structured choreography and complex partnering work.
